Sanjay is the king

Sanjay Dutt plays a cop that stands up for what is right. He plays a modern day Dirty Harry in this movie and he does an excellent job. Om Puri also does an excellent job and his lines are hilarious. This movie is excellent, but the story line is average. If you like Mission Kashmir, you should see this.

A Sci-Fi Classic By All Means

I should start this by saying that I always leaned more toward Star Wars than Star Trek. I've memorized much of the Star Wars epic sci-fi fantasy and numerous characters, but the universe of Star Trek is one I have not really explored. The beauty of this film is that you can be a hard core Trek-fan or a simple lover of sci-fi or action and still find this an incredibly enjoyable movie. I myself was surprised when I first saw it, seeing all the relatable humor it was pouring out, but unlike the redundant idiocy of let's say Michael Bay, the jokes are welcome and don't go too far.

The cast is pretty well put together, and each character is pretty memorable and involved quite well. Eric Bana was excellent as Nero, not to mention Bruce Greenwood is awesome as well. Zachary Quinto is the beloved Spock and for one of those hyper-intelligent characters it's a character you will end up feeling emotionally drawn to. The story never drags at all and it's all together a pretty well written piece of sci-fi I must add. To be honest Chris pine is great in the movie, it's just that at times he too much of an archetype 'bad-ass', dare I say it? How many times have I seen a drunken protagonist in a bar starting a fight with a guy and/or trying to get a girl who views him as trash. Other than that, though, he does fine, and the rest of the cast is no less than good.

The cinematography was beautiful on its own, let alone the action scenes. Speaking of which, a new bar for space battles has been set. And the score by Michael Giacchino and Alexander Courage was not too shabby. In fact I thoroughly embraced it. I consider it a must see, being one of those rare sci-fi gems anyone can enjoy.

A narrow-minded movie

This movie is a superb production, but lacks of tolerance or flexibility or breadth on its view. The photography and locations were chosen beautifully. The story is based on revolution days in Mexico. The movie seems to have been directed as an anti-catholic propaganda against "cristeros" by evangelic fundamentalist, and the use of icons and dialogs are so obvious and deliberated that should be seen as educational essay of movie mistakes that shouldn't been done by a director. I think the movie make conclusions by its own an doesn't allow to make your own. It should have been a interesting movie but you get bored after the first 5 minutes.

Barring a new look, there isn't much difference in the role for Prabhas from what he had done in his previous films - single handedly he wipes out bunch of goons, breaks iron culverts etc. But as usual, he is good in that role. His character as bar tender, a student, a friend, a leader and a savior is nicely projected on the screen. Heroism is elevated to the core in the film. His confrontation scene with Prakashraj (that comes as interval bang), his encouragement for a student to fight Khakha's son etc.. such scenes are done very good in the film and elevate the character of Prabhas. and Illeana acted very good, her role plays only for songs.

Elegance in the absence of depth

With the 30's Shanghai as background, the film is a gangs story, a romance story, a brotherhood story and a simple story, with a theme portraying the lust for power against brotherhood piety. The narrative is unrestricted with plots generally linear albeit that it is told in flashback. The story embeds complex relations among characters with such relations & revenges constituting parallel narratives for similarity and contrast. The narrative is framed from the perspective of Feng (Daniel Wu) and supplemented with ancillary perspective from the other lead, Mark (Chen Chang). Director Alexi Tan attempts to make it moderately stylistic by use of freeze action (not freeze frame), complete silence and some other cinematographic devices (obviously Tan restrains it from being overdone). Though the movie comes with strong leads and their fine staging, the diegesis is relatively weak and shallow in portraying the evolution of the key antagonists' personalities down the plots. Nevertheless, visual motif (flicking of cigarette on a cigarette box) is repeatedly used to reinforce the use of power and the desire for such. In terms of visuals, the film comes with replete elegant costumes and settings with Mckintoshes, western hats, suits and cuffed shirts' sleeves filling the mise-en-scenes. Fine mastering of lighting and shooting angles in the presence of both diegetic and non-diegetic music delivers a moody combination of visual and acoustic amusement to the audience. The gun-pointing scenes are fairly flamboyant in mounting up tension whilst sudden fires and zigzags of characters' motions bring occasional shocks to the audience and generate uncomfortable surprises to the audience. Yet the visual-acoustic artifice is less than sufficient to redress its shortcoming in the meek, if not weak, psychological coverage of the characters. The film is another product in which substance is subordinate to style.

malayalam version of schindler's list

I can not give full mark to this movie even though it was one of the movie which can be considered as in a Hollywood flavour .Kaalapani is the first movie in Malayalam, recorded in "Dolby Stereo SR" (The tamil version of this film is released in DTS .But original malayalam version and Hindi version used "Dolby stereo SR" only ) . The sound effects are awesome. But we can see the scenes of some famous Hollywood films in this movie such as directly copied.

Eg , 1. The hero (Mohan Lal) and second hero (Prabhu ) are caught by tribals in Andaman. They are kept inside a big tub (a wooden tub half of which poured water ) .They tries to rescue themselves from there . All these sequence can be seen in the Hollywood film "King Solomon's mine" ( if my memory is right ) .

2. ALl the other scenes (yes, almost 70% scenes in andaman) can be scene in the Oscar winning film "Schindler's List " . I think the director Priyadarshan is very much impressed by this Spielberg movie. Even the conclusion of the film is just same as "Schindler's List" .

Ilaya raja has given some beautiful songs again. Also back ground music is remarkable. Santhosh Sivan has done excellent photography in the film .

Riveting Movie with a great Oleg Taktarov performance.

"Rockaway" is not always an easy movie to watch. The brutality keeps coming, as the movie tells the story of a returning vet from Afghanistan who faces as much personal chaos in the States as he encountered at war. Nicholas Gonzalez plays Trane, the homecoming vet, whose wife and child were murdered in Rockaway when they got in the way of the local mob. The brutality is necessary, because the story (said to be truth based) can not take it easy on either the facts or its themes to be effective. Trane comes home to neighborhood warfare and economic desolation in an often overlooked pocket of America. One of his adversaries is a Russian mob enforcer played masterfully by Oleg Taktarov, depicting another Afghan vet who served in the Soviet Army. Taktarov's character Ivan is menacing, but the actor also makes him sympathetic as Ivan, like Trane, was psychologically and morally exhausted by war in the Middle East. Taktarov gets better with every role, and when he's on the screen, "Rockaway" delivers its messages with breathless impact.

I was impressed by the script.

The script was good...in fact the script was great.

The movie itself was really poorly made and because of that, the entire film looked like it's just bad.

What was the worst out of all of it was the music.

The music absolutely killed this film.

Other aspects were lighting, casting, makeup, locations, camera and a lot of other stuff too...but the music was horrendous.

The story itself was remarkable and that is why I gave it an 8.

You ruined a great script and a possible theatrical release because of vastly under-budgeting.

This is mere proof that not having enough financing can kill a film and a bunch of careers.

Don't ever let this happen again.

Typical movie but not too impressive

This is a typical Suresh Gopi thriller movie- Crime,investigation,action,dance,dialogs...but still I did not find it too impressive. It is unnecessary of some Malayalam movie makers to try and portray Christianity in the negative,giving all villainous characters Christian names,using verses from the Bible as dialogs in the negative,Using biblical events as ideas in the film.All this is not warranted.

Otherwise Gopi's acting is good,Siddique does well as the villain,music is fine.The film can be watched once,but I personally feel Blasphemy is wrong.

Stylished Violence

So stylish was Exiled that the Italians must be jealous, with Sergio Leone buzzing in his grave. A simple story set in Macau, the restrained dialog and general lack of facial expressions cannot diminish the loyalty that these men have towards each other, even when they have been ordered to act otherwise. Between wonderfully orchestrated concerts of claustrophobic bullet symphonies are beautifully drawn out scenes utilizing the mundane aspects of life to help further the bonds of ancient friendships. And all of this, action and drama alike, drawn forth by the devils of fate, where one can either choose his fate or be torn apart through lack of choice. The acting was great for what this was, with the wickedly beautiful Josie Ho acting as the mostly silent, secret force that foments the deadly events to come. Johnny To's direction was phenomenal in his ability to allow things to come together almost by fate. Everything about this film oozes a style reminiscent of John Woo though a step ahead of even this master of action.

One scene that particularly put me off

You can tell this movie is truly low-budget... I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the chase scene after the first 20 or so minutes into the movie, where two guys are chasing a cable car with their convertible... That whole 5-minute sequence was taken from the movie Metro, featuring Eddie Murphy and Michael Rapaport! You can see during a few clips the persons sitting in the convertible are clearly Murphy/Rapaport, even without freezing the frame.

I started watching this movie with a fairly open-mind, but taking scenes from another movie and then very poorly incorporating them to the plot is just wrong. Even with a low budget.

If you can't afford to make a scene such as this one, don't take a whole sequence from another film, think of something else! Watching this movie might have been a good way to kill off a couple of hours on a late night, but that scene was just too cheesy to even remotely try and take the rest of it seriously.

One Man Show

A reasonably good storyline and plot spoiled by a poor or below average direction from Shaji Kailas. He still believes camera gimmicks can lift the standards of a movie :-(. The first 30 minutes is fast and interesting when the anti terrorist squad goes behind an email hoax. The film fails to retain the tempo after that and rest is up to Mohanlal to carry on the movie. He hasn't done bad though, except some poor English dialogs :-) Really hoped someone else was the director, say Joshi. The role of Kaviyoor Ponnamma and related scenes really bulges out of the theme and looks like a desperate attempt to lure the other gender audience. To sum up, watch it only if your an avid fan of MohanLal. Else avoid.

Just great!

Those disappointed by Toho's rather tepid effort of Godzilla 2000 will likely find redemption in Godzilla X Megaguirus. It corrects every flaw in G2K, and cuts some major technical ground with the series.

Masaaki Tezuka's direction is great, keeping the film moving at a frenetic pace and never letting it bog down in a single sequence. Michiru Oshima's score is great, far better than Takayuki Hattori's limp work on G2K. Kenji Suzuki creates the best special effects in the history of the franchise. The combinations of suitimation and CGI on display are sublime, rivaling Hollywood work, and the characters interact with Godzilla with greater complexity than ever before. The heroine actually rides Godzilla through the ocean in one scene!

Still, the movie has less realistic grit than Godzilla 2000 did, and the story and characters are much less engaging (with the exception of the heroine's revenge motive). The movie plays less like a sequel to the original and more like an episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. But that's not necessarily all bad.

This was an amazing film

I attended a screening of Cowboy Smoke at the Austin Film Festival and was truly blown away. My friend wanted to see Cowboy Smoke because it was a modern western and this was all I knew going into the screening and I'll admit, I'm not a big fan of westerns.

To my surprise Cowboy Smoke was much more than a western. Cowboy Smoke manages to be an entertaining action-adventure genre film but also an engaging social commentary. Writer/Director Will Moore is a talent to keep your eye on. He somehow managed to make an indie action film with a great story. His ability to hold this extremely ambitious and epic movie together has me impressed. The remote setting is captured beautifully by director of photography Steven Acevedo. These stunning visuals along with an original score by Brian Satterwhite, which was so good that I asked the director where I could get a copy of the CD, give the film a big budget feel. I was surprised with the acting as well. Usually with indie films the acting is the weakest part of the film. Not the case with Cowboy Smoke. All star performances from Estella Perez, Matt Johnston and James Paul in supporting roles. Joe as the convenience store clerk, wanna-be cowboy has such a great character arch that you will be cheering out loud for him in the film's final scenes and is played to perfection by newcomer Mike Lutz. Chad Mathews as loner desperado, Wes, manages to create a character that outwardly cares for no one other than himself but deep down we know better. Mathews does this all with nuances and body movements. A great performance.

So what was weak about Cowboy Smoke you ask? No complaints here. After spending four days of watching your standard festival indie fare, Cowboy Smoke was an all out blessing. I would not be surprised if I saw this film in the local theater in the months to come and I would recommend Cowboy Smoke to anyone and everyone, regardless of if they were a Western fan or not.

Cool film

When I saw the cast on the posters for 'Tokyo' I went "wow". Kelly Chen, Ekin Cheng and of course Tonly Leung. I was at first sceptical because of the Director Jingle Ma who directed another action film 'VR cops' which was terrible. But for his 2nd action film he really has learned a lot. Obviously basing himself on John Woo (note the amount of dove shots and use of slow motions) and trying out some 'timelapse' shots, it really brings out some life into the film. Tony Leung and Ekin Cheng actually play well off each other, for the cantonese audience it is at times obvious when the cast ad-lib which was left untranslated and simplified on the English translation. The film is very simple and the twists get a bit over-done with one after another, but overall it did turn out quite good. Personally, I enjoyed the film with it's unique blend of Japanese and Chinese acting and a comedic score, it is a fun film.
